Troubleshooting issues with Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning uses a brief steering wheel turn to prevent a potential lane departure when it detects you are unintentionally drifting out of your lane lines. If needed, you may receive additional Lane Departure Warning alerts. System alerts do not occur if you’re using your turn signal or it detects you may be intentionally leaving your lane.

If your vehicle is equipped with the available Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning feature and you are having issues with the feature functioning properly, here are some possible explanations.

Do this first before troubleshooting Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning

Before you get started, make sure you are familiar with the Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning feature. Some things you may notice about the feature are part of normal operation.

Why doesn’t the system warn me when I cross the lane marker?

It won’t issue a warning if it detects you’re intentionally leaving the lane by using a turn signal, intentionally steering out of the lane, or deliberately accelerating or braking.

Why does the vehicle cross the lane marker before I get a Lane Departure Warning?

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning is not intended to replace normal driver attention or steering, so you should be actively steering to stay in your lane at all times. It’s also designed to try to avoid giving you corrections when you’re intentionally changing lanes. Therefore, your vehicle may be over the lane marker before a warning is issued.

What does it mean when the Lane Keep Assist icon turns white?

When this happens, the feature will not provide steering assistance. The Lane Keep Assist icon will turn white under these conditions:

  • The feature’s camera is unable to detect lane lines due to poor visibility, such as conditions (e.g., fog, rain or faded lane lines) in which you would have difficulty seeing the lane lines.
  • You’re not moving fast enough for the feature to activate.
  • If you're braking or accelerating.

What might prevent Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning from working properly?

If the camera is covered or not properly cleaned (e.g., if the windshield is covered with frost or snow), the system might not function as intended. Also, if lanes are not clearly visible to the system’s camera sensor, the system may not function as intended. You may see a white Lane Keep Assist icon display when this happens on some vehicles.

Why did I get the “Take Steering” alert when I am actively driving the vehicle?

You may receive a “Take Steering” alert when you are driving normally with little steering wheel movement. This may occur when you don’t need to move your steering wheel often to maintain your lane position.

Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.
